Challenges and Opportunities for the interdisciplinary MSc Climate Change study programme at UCPH

The next morning session from the GSC network ‘Research-based Education in Sustainability & Planetary Health’ will have only one presentation to allow enough time for questions and group discussions.
Anders Svensson, associate professor at Niels Bohr Institute, will focus on experiences from building the interdisciplinary MSc programme in Climate Change.

The MSc Climate Change programme at the University of Copenhagen brings together students from natural sciences and social sciences/humanities across two profiles, each with distinct disciplinary foundations but a shared academic core.
This talk examines the practical and didactic challenges of such a programme: how to accommodate students arriving with very diverse prior knowledge, how to establish a common academic vocabulary across disciplinary traditions, and how to determine the appropriate level of ambition for a shared curriculum.
The talk also addresses the question of disciplinary scope - in particular, which research fields belong within a climate change education. The aim is to offer faculty colleagues a candid account of the subject matter and the structural tensions involved in interdisciplinary programme design.
