Cross-disciplinary Biosolutions Seminar Series: Biotextiles – green breakthrough, dead end or just the beginning?
The seminar is open to all interested, including researchers, industry officials, and students.
Biotextiles are often presented as a green solution to the climate crisis in the textile industry. But how sustainable are they – and for whom?
The industries behind clothing and textile production have a significant impact on our environment and climate. The industry is estimated to be responsible for between 2 and 10 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions, as the most common textile fibres rely on fossil fuels. Can biotextiles contribute to reducing the use of virgin, fossil-based synthetic materials and offer a greener solution?
This seminar challenges the narrative of biotextiles and explores what is actually required for biotextiles to become a meaningful and sustainable biosolution. What do we already know – and what should we investigate? Through a cross-disciplinary lens, the seminar will explore how biotextiles operate at the intersection of biotechnology, culture, and society. It aims to uncover the knowledge gaps that must be addressed if we are to take sustainability ambitions seriously.
